Johanna Bergfelt
Johanna teaches all levels of modern and is also a substitute teacher for ballet.
Johanna hails from Sweden, where she worked for a repertory modern dance company called Östgöta Baletten. She also worked with the Barents Dance Ensemble, a collaboration project, which connects dancers from Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia. She also spent two years with Norrdans, another repertory dance company in the north of Sweden.
When Johanna came to Canada, it wasn’t long before she developed and impressive résumé, working and performing with the Toronto Dance Theatre, Kaeja’d’dance, Santee Smith, Kathleen Rea, Pro Arte Danza, Darcey Callison, Louis Laberge Côté, Kate Alton, Holly Small, Chimera Project, Robert Glumbek and William Yong.
Johanna began her teaching career with the Barents Dance Ensemble when she was asked to teach a company class. From then on, her reputation as a first-rate instructor grew, and she became one of the most sought-after modern dance teachers in the industry.
Johanna’s teaching strategy focuses on optimizing students’ abilities as dancers while protecting the body and preventing injury. She wants her students to feel like her class is “the place to be” for building technique, developing talent, expanding creativity and getting a great workout!
Live drummers and pianists add to the energy of her class, providing an extra layer of artistry and excitement. Johanna’s students work hard, laugh hard and can always expect to break a good sweat!
She believes in the importance of providing individual corrections which help students become better dancers. Watching them improve and develop their talent is a big part of what makes teaching such a pleasure for Johanna. She takes great pleasure in what she does, and her passion, energy and love of dance can be felt from the beginning to the end of every one of her exhilarating classes.
